Fibre Reinforced Concrete Manhole Covers and Frames - CSIR - SERC Technology

Fibre Reinforced Concrete Manhole Covers and Frames

I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I understand that "Fibre Reinforced Concrete Manhole Covers and Frames" was developed by Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai, India.

We use to see these manhole covers on the roads. Earlier these are manufactured in Iron and it is more costly. These iron covers will be rusted ones and so this FRC manhole technology gains more importance after the introduction of these manholes covers and frames. Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) manhole covers provide an alternative to the conventional cast iron manhole covers used in water and sewerage mains. They are made from steel reinforced cement concrete with the addition of high tensile cut steel fibres in correct proportions. Fibre reinforced concrete posses superior tensile, wear, impact and fatigue properties over the cast iron.

Detailed investigations and field trials, have been carried out on the fibre reinforced concrete over the past several years. The FRC covers satisfy the requirements prescribed in the ISI (Indian Standards) code for manhole covers. It is 60% of the cost of earlier CI manhole covers.

These FRC manhole covers and frames have good features, they are

Circular in shape with a diameter of 60 cm

Use of medium strength concrete, reinforced with HSD bars and high tensile steel fibres

Produced by adopting pressure cum vibration technique using steel moulds

Pilfer-proof, durable and long lasting. Possess greater impact and wear resistance

Ductility and energy absorption is far superior

Suitable for mass production at site or in a factory, with less capital investment

Upto 40% savings in cost compared to cast-iron man hole covers

This technology has already been given to many organizations and private entrepreneurs through National Research and Development Corporation (NRDC), New Delhi.
