Figuring Out Which Gardening Tools For Your Project
In almost every person's life he or she will think "I should start my own garden!" Maybe one man daydreams about growing vegetables of his own
. Another person may have his heart set on a luxurious rose garden. Whatever your reasons are for starting your own garden and no matter how big you want your garden to be, you are going to need specific tools to finish the job. Just about everything you do in a garden can be done using your hands (and your own personal brute strength). The right gardening tools will save you lots of time and effort. Use these gardening tools to help you as you work in your garden.
Having a garden spade in your toolbox is essential if your garden is going to contain smaller and more delicate plants and flowers. A garden spade an help you dig up weeds. They are good for moving and clearing debris away from your plants without damaging your plants' bases. You can use your spade to help with seed planting. Gardeners probably won't need to use their spades all the time-they are more for those special occasions when you need to garden without wanting to worry about the tensile strength of your plants. Your spade will save you lots of time and effort with a bunch of different gardening tasks and projects.
If you have a large garden or if you are thinking of moving a great deal of materials at the same time, you should think about buying a garden cart. Everything from dirt and debris to garden tools and larger items can be hauled in a garden cart. Some gardeners find the garden cart especially useful for hauling compost from one place to another. The garden cart is most often used to transport large piles of dirt to and from a garden plot. If you need to move a big pile of something you can use the garden cart to do it. Wheelbarrows are also good for this if you are in a pinch. You will need hoes for your garden. If you are new to gardening you will probably be a little bit afraid of using a hoe. Using a hoe often feels very unnecessary when you are starting your first garden. More often than not, though, hoeing is simply something that a gardener has to do. Hoes are used in the creation of garden rows. It is a lot easier to make rows in your garden when you are standing up. Another major use of the hoe is for row outlining at planting time. It is easier to do this type of project if your hoe has a good and long handle on it. It sounds preposterous but using your hoe will save you lots of time while you are putting your garden together. Kneelers are great tools to have on hand. Most gardening involves spending a lot of time crouching or on your hands and needs. You can easily make your own garden kneelers out of Styrofoam or similar materials-anything soft will do for you to lean your knees on. You can also buy mats made especially for gardeners. Mats and kneelers are used to help ease the wear and tear on your knees that comes from gardening. Many gardeners choose to use mats and kneelers because they help keep their clothing from getting to worn while they garden. Pitchforks are great, even for gardeners who only want to plant small gardens in their yards. A pitchfork is, basically, a large scale trowel or spade (it does the same work, it just does more of it). You can use your pitchfork to turn your soil around, increase the oxygen flow to that soil and move your compost around. Compost needs to be turned as it breaks down and decomposes-you will need to have a pitchfork to help you with the turning. To keep the compost from losing its value and forming a gross, crusty shell use the pitchfork to turn it often.
Soil testers are a necessity if you are going to be growing difficult plants. If the PH balance or nutrient content of the soil is not exactly right-sometimes plants won't grow. You can use your soil tester to figure out if your soil is good enough for the plants you want to grow. Of course, you only need this tool if you are going to be very very serious about your garden's plants. A good example of someone who needs a soil tester is someone who grows orchids (flowers that are known for requiring very specific growing conditions to thrive). Soil testers are also great for farmers because they can be used to help the farmer plan what items to plant where every season based on the soil quality in different areas of the farm.
Many people find gardening to be a good hobby (some even make a living doing it). As you learn more about growing things and gardening in general the more you will be tempted to buy a bunch of extra gardening tools. Don't rush out and buy everything right away-start with a few simple tools that every gardener needs. The more time you spend working with your plants the more you will start to learn the difference between the tools you use and the tools you wish you needed to use. Gardening is thought to be a very relaxing activity. There is something inherently calming about the act of "playing in the dirt" that many people enjoy after a long or stressful day. Lots of people new to gardening will only use their hands . After a while, however, gardening tools become easier to use. Eventually you will feel so comfortable using your gardening tools that they will feel like extensions of your body. If you give it enough time using gardening tools will not feel clumsy anymore; it will feel natural. You will wake up one day surprised to find gardening to be very enjoyable! Gardening is great! Many people find gardening particularly rewarding and sometimes soothing. In fact, many gardeners reward themselves with their own plants-especially those that grow edible plants. Moving and working in a garden is reported to be quite relaxing. The nice thing about growing your own garden is that it can be done throughout the year, inside and outside and your garden can be as big or as little as you want it to be. With the right gardening tools even the best gardening experience will be made better because they save time and get more done! Don't worry if you aren't sure which kinds of gardening tools you need. When you start your first garden you are going to want to purchase everything in the store. Don't get duped or give in to temptation: start small and then add tools as you find uses for them. You'll save a lot of potential storage space this way (not to mention saving your bank account). Before you realize what has happened you'll be able to look at your gardening tools and instinctively know which tools you need to complete your tasks.
