Financial Aid, Scholarships and Grants Provided To New Hampshire Residents

The main program for this is the New England Board of Higher Education Tuition Break. The program works on the principle that if a New Hampshire-based college or university doesn't offer the degree program a student desires, the Break will provide financial assistance as long as the student stays within the six states of New England. The amount varies on the school and location. There is also the nationally recognized Robert C. Byrd Honors program, which contributes an additional $1,500 a year to the top students from any high school to any institution in the U.S.

Within the state is the Granite State Scholars program. It is available to high school graduates under the age of 21, currently living in New Hampshire, and planning to attend one of the four state-run universities. Dependent on both need and academic record, the amount awarded is determined by the college. In 2010, over 800 students got scholarships from this program.

There is also the Mary Millikin Scholarship for more general scholarships. It is open to New Hampshire citizens who are taking a full four-year degree program within the state. It awards 75 students $1,000 a year.

A highly original program is called Plan New Hampshire. This pro-green plan is for locals who plan to study in the environmental sciences except architecture, mechanical engineering, interior design or studio arts. Last year it awarded $1,000 per student. "Plan NH" also has a fellowship program for those who need to pursue a post-graduate degree. Unlike the scholarship plan, the fellowship scheme includes all earth and energy conscious disciplines. The awards are also much higher; going between $2,500 to $5,000 a year.

If the student has a direct relation to someone who is a member of a local chapter of the American Legion, there is another package for them. For this program, entitled simply the New Hampshire Scholarship, the student must also provide letters of recommendation, fill out an essay and provide their academic records. In return, if they qualify they receive $1,000 to the in-state university of their choice.

Those looking to enter the medicinal or veterinary field, also have their own respective assistance programs. Applicants are restricted to the state's universities. If qualified, the school will receive $12,000 a year towards the applicant's tuition. The award can vary, based on a capitation system New Hampshire utilizes.

While it is recognized that New Hampshire is one of the smallest of the United States, there are other forms of financial aid available to its citizens besides those listed above. After all, the state is also known for resourcefulness and independence. A student who utilizes these virtues will find there's a lot more out there.
