Find A New Job - A Step By Step Plan

If you are currently on the job market looking for a new opportunity

, you want to be sure that you land one that you'll be happy with and can stick with for the long term. Whether you are currently unemployed or unhappy with your current employment, you'll want to determine what it is you want first before beginning your search.

Start by taking an inventory of your likes and dislikes. Think about the jobs you've had previously or the one that you have currently and then, list all of the things that you like and next, list all of the things that you don't like. It's important to list everything you can think of including job duties, manager, co-workers, opportunities for advancement, salary, benefits, commuting time and anything else you can think of.

Once you've got your list, you then should determine which of those "things" you must have in your next job. Don't be too picky otherwise you may not find any suitable opportunities at all. For any item on your list that was something you didn't like about a previous job, write down the opposite of that. For example, if you didn't like your co-workers because they were unfriendly or unsupportive, write down that you would like to work with people you can happily eat lunch with every day.

Then, you will want to determine what else you would like in your new job that perhaps has never been a part of any job you've ever had before. For example, suppose you're currently working in the insurance industry but you've always been interested in working for a company that's in the medical industry. List the medical industry as one of your "wants". Don't worry if you don't currently have any experience in the medical industry because you probably have some transferable skills that you be of value to a potential employer in that field.

Ultimately, you need to be strategic about your job search. It won't do you any good to keep your options open for everything and anything. I've been a resume writer for many years and I've rarely seen that work. By listing what you want first, you can determine the right course of action in terms of developing your resume and your job search strategy. The number one thing that prevents people from getting more job interviews and landing a job they're happy with is a lack of focus.
