The kinds of jobs that you can get as an electrician offshore are essentially three. You may be an:Chief Electrician, an Electrician, or an Electrical Technician.


Every member of an electrician offshore crew are part of the maintenance section of the offshore drilling rig. The Chief electrician is in charge and the technicians as well as offshore electrician will report to him. The chief electrician has his own supervisor of course who is the maintenance supervisor of the rig.Essentially you will work a twelve hour day, and may work from two weeks up to four weeks. The same amount of time that you spend working, you will also parallel in days off.

Depending on what you're doing on the rig, the electrician offshore may be involved in a wide array of tasks, such as working on generators, controlling systems, motors, transformers, regulators or even distributors. You will work outside as well as inside and the weather isn't always pretty. There can be excessive heat, wild storms, lightning, rain, snow, and a vast amount of other conditions that won't make it pleasant.

You will quite likely be in some of the most cramped areas and the dirtiest places as an electrician offshore. You may be climbing on the structure in order to get to what needs fixed. While it is mandatory that you use protective equipment the job could be described as dirty and dangerous, but it has its up side too.
