Finding Ways To Stay Cool In The Heat

Finding different ways to stay cool is so important during the hot summer months

or if you live in a climate that is hot year-round like Phoenix or Orlando. Getting creative about ways to stay cool can also be important so you don't have to keep pumping up the air conditioning.

One thing to consider is how energy efficient your home is. The cool air from your air conditioning may be leaking out of your home just as quickly as you are pumping it in. Running the air conditioning more than necessary can be a huge energy suck. If you have the opportunity, consider getting a home energy audit and find out where you can save energy (and money) and your home.

To help keep your house cool and save energy, change your windows for energy efficient windows. This will help keep the cool air in your house and the hot air outside. You can also buy window coverings that will help keep the hot air out and the cold air in.

Also, add insulation around air conditioning ducts if they are going through unconditioned spaces like attics, crawl spaces and garages. Making sure your have good insulation between these spaces of your home and your living spaces will also help to keep the cool air inside your home where it belongs.

Make sure that your fireplace damper is tightly closed to ensure no cool air is escaping from there.

Beyond changes or updates to your home, there are things that you can do personally to stay cool.

Move downstairs. If you have a basement or lower level in your home, more to those levels during the hot times of day. Warm air is less dense than cool air, so it moves up making the higher levels or homes hotter.

Dress or undress for the heat. On hot days, sometimes the most comfortable way to stay cool is to wear nothing or next to nothing. If you are somewhere where you can be in just your "birthday suit" or your bathing suit, which can help keep you cool. Wearing natural fabrics can also help keep the heat at bay. Polyester, rayon or other artificial fabrics can often trap the heat and make you hotter. It is also a good idea to wear lighter colors. The darker the colors of clothing you wear, the more of the sun's rays your clothes will absorb and the hotter you will be.

Keep a cool water bottle around. Fill a standard hot water bottle with ice water, and instead of drinking it; keep it close by to keep you cool. Place it on your forehead or in your covers as you are going to sleep at night.
