Finding the "Mavericks" surf competition off the beaten path
My business requires field trips - unadulterated
, adventurous, creativity inspiring sojourns. Because this can be a pricey proposition, I've become a master of northern CA road trips that are close to my home, and therefore easy on the wallet. They require, without negotiation, great sites and sights, food, alcoholic spirits of some sort, and that special sine qua non that emanates from this great, albeit cash-strapped state.
Off to Half Moon Bay, California, my fearless crew decides, on a day that is beyond-belief, gorgeous. This is the home of the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival, a fun and now touristy event that draws great crowds. But we aren't looking for hordes, rather, harmony with the sea, seafood and sun. So we short-stop just north, to Princeton-by-the-Sea. This little nook of great seafood shacks, mini wine bars and a bay front brew pub works wonders. We are inspired to sing a ditty or two as we note all the college named streets; Yale, Harvard, Stanford, because, on this date, we need to conjure up ideas for music videos for our new venture, Songs2See, http://www.songs2see.com, where we create one-of-a-kind songs and videos for cities, tourist bureaus, businesses and well, Aunt Jane's 99th birthday celebration.
The beer sampler was a niner this day: nine delicious samples of handcrafted beers - we were stuck on the pumpkin ale and ordered a "growler" to go. The seafood sampler worked as a great compliment, as did the blackened snapper sandwich. (Or is that suppose to be the other way around?) One of the ales was the "Maverick" and that made us realize, we must be close to that sacred ground the cream-of-the-cream of surfers venerate. But, elusive it is.
As per the "Mavericks" website:
Mavericks is a world-renowned big wave break located one-half mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, California.
Since the early 1990s, when the local spot was introduced to the world, Mavericks has become an epicenter of modern big-wave surfing, attracting elite riders to test its limits (and theirs) each time it rears its awe-inspiring head. With waves cresting as high as 50 feet, ridiculously strong currents, dangerous rocks, perilously shallow reefs, and bone-chilling water temperatures, Mavericks is like no other place on Earth.
Each winter, during a waiting period typically set for sometime between November and March if and when conditions are perfect, and giant swells roll in from far across the Pacific The Mavericks Surf Contest is held. On just 24 hours notice, two dozen of the surfing community's bravest and most skillful souls assemble to confront the thundering mountain of salt water many consider to be the most dangerous wave Mother Nature has ever concocted.
The question for us was "could we find this location?" Fortified by food, drink and our tentative tune, we marched on and in fact succeeded in our quest, after a quick stop at the Maverick surf shop (for directions).
Beautiful but understated, quiet now in anticipation of the winter ahead, we took a moment to absorb the genre and all it represented. Then back to our car and our life north of both Princeton and San Francisco we went. We were singing off key, a tune to hopefully accompany our pictures.
A new production for songs2see.com and a great day, had by all.
If you are coming to CA, don't miss this nook of beauty and challenge!
