Fire Safes 101
Imagine having everything of value consumed in seconds by a raging fire
. Nothing you can do can stop what goes on, even if you call the fire department. The only exception is if you put your belongings in a fire safe. So what is a fire safe? It is a unique type of safe that is designed with material that expands to heat. This prevents water and fire from getting inside, ensuring that your valuables remain protected during a blaze.
Of course, it's important to note that not all fire safes are the same. Size-wise, some are large enough to actually be considered "safes" while others are considered chests or boxes. If you get the latter, you might not be able to have a safe big enough to hold all your important stuff. So, to prevent this occurrence, make sure you're getting fire safes with a large number of cubic feet. Generally, the larger the cubic feet the better.
You should also look at a fire safe's fireproof rating. This tells you how much heat a fire safe can take for a certain period of time. Consider a fire safe with a fireproof rating of at least an hour and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that the safe can withstand 300 degrees within a period of an hour. If the fire gets hotter than that or if the fire lasts longer than an hour, your belongings might still get burned.
In the case of electronic media, it's important to get a fire safe with a lower fireproof rating. In fact, according to Colin Eyre, (an expert on fire safes), the fireproof rating for such a fire safe needs to be no more than 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Time doesn't matter much, but keep in mind the higher the time the more security you have if the firefighters can't get to the safe fast enough.
Finally, you want to make sure you get a fire safe that's rated by the Underwriters Laboratory, (or the UL). This is considered an official organization in the fire safe world. And if your fire safe is rated by them you can be assured you're dealing with the real thing.
In conclusion, you don't have to let your belongings disappear according to the whims of a fire. With fire safes, you can take comfort that your belongings will stay intact even in the worst of flames. Make sure you still do your homework. Look at the cubic feet to determine if the safe is big enough for your situation. Then, look at its fireproof rating. If you get the right combination of these things, you'll never have to worry about the effectiveness of your fire safe.
