Fish Oil Versus Krill Oil – Discover The Real Truth Behind The Hype
Fish Oil Versus Krill Oil Discover The Real Truth Behind The Hype
With the fish oil versus krill oil debate still ongoing, let me share with you the facts so you can make up your own mind. One thing is for sure, things are definitely not what they seem.
I have long been an advocate of the huge benefits of quality omega 3 fish supplements and was very interested in the whole fish oil versus krill oil argument until the facts become clear.
So far there have only been a handful of studies on krill and many decades worth on fish, so much of the information coming out is manipulated and not all based on the truth.
Some things are true like the fact that krill are generally free from contamination and contain antioxidants like astaxanthin that most oils from fish do not.
What the suppliers fail to mention is the extremely low amount of the right omega 3's they contain. While fatty fish contain plenty of both DHA and EPA fatty acids, krill has very little.
DHA fats provide just about all the health benefits like lowering inflammation, treating arthritis, cutting your risk of a premature heart attack by 40% and being essential for proper brain health and mental well-being.
As a comparison, you would get around 280mg of DHA from a 1000mg fish supplement while only around 25- 45mg from the krill. So quality fish supplements can have over ten times more which gives you far more benefits.
The nest issue is that of astaxanthin, an extremely useful antioxidant found in the krill. While it is true to say the most fish supplements do not contain it, some premium oils do and in fact have more than the krill.
A big selling point for the oils from krill is the purity and there is no doubt in my mind that they are very pure, mostly coming from the Antarctic Ocean which is still pristine. It is also true that if you select a quality fish oil that has been molecularly distilled to remove the toxins like mercury and arsenic, that they are as pure if not more so.
For me, the fish oil versus krill oil is a no-brainer when you look at sustainability.
The retailer Whole Foods in the US has recently cleared all the krill oil from it stores because of the clear evidence that it is being overfished. This small crustacean is essential to the marine ecosystem and without sufficient numbers, many species, including the whales, could die out.
Oil from fish is a by-product and poses a zero threat while the krill are hunted purely for their oil.
I hope you can see that by simply taking a quality fish supplement instead of the krill ones, you can enjoy many more health benefits and help protect the marine ecosystem too.
