Five Key Checks To Make Before Committing To Buying A New Car
There are many tales about pushy used car salesmen and dodgy car sellers
, enough to make anyone wary when it comes time to buy a new or used car. When buying a car you should know in your mind what you are looking for, if it isnt a specific make and model then you should have a general idea of the type of car and what your requirements are such as whether you need a little runabout or a full sized family car.
Below are five key checks that motoring experts recommended you bear in mind whenever you go to see someone about buying a new car:
The condition
No one wants a car full of dents and scratches so you obviously want to see what condition the car is in, make sure you do this during the daylight and not when it has been raining. The rain and the dark can hide scratches and bumps, even rusting so you should be sure there is no obvious damage on the outside, paying extra attention to the bumpers as these are most prone to knocks and scuffs. One motor group recommends getting early to any viewing so you can take some time alone without the pressures of the seller to get a good look at the car and its condition.
The Mileage
The mileage will normally be mentioned in the advert but sometimes people may say something ambiguous such as low mileage, with second hand cars this can be a bit subjective so always bear the year it was made in mind when looking at mileage. For example, 50,000 miles on a car that is ten or more years old is pretty good but on a car that is less than two years old can indicate that your chosen car has been driven excessively and may be prone to repairs.
The Engine
The engine type is one of the key factors that car buyers consider, the bigger the engine, the more powerful the car will be. This does have a downside as cars with larger engine capacities will have larger road tax and insurance premiums typically. You should have a look under the bonnet on older cars to make sure that the engine looks to be in good condition, if it is looking worn and dirty then you may have to get it serviced and looked at by a mechanic. You should also be aware of whether it is a diesel or petrol engine as some people and their driving styles prefer one type.
The Interior
Similar to the external appearance the interior is equally as important, after all this is where you will be sat every time you drive your car. Some people prefer cars that have not been driven by smokers, this should be avoided even if you are smoker yourself as cigarette smoke can stain the interior as well as make it smell and obviously dropping a cigarette can leading to burns and holes in the upholstery.
Service History
When buying any car, especially older vehicles you will want to know about the cars history. A car with a full service history and past MOT tests will show any past problems and repair jobs done to the car which may indicate how your ownership of the car could pan out like. It is also good to check the mileage is correct, if your current mileage is less than the last test then it is obvious that someone has altered the mileage to make the car seem more appealing, this is often referred to as clocking.
There are many other checks recommended to make before purchasing a new or used car, these five should help you avoid any nasty surprises when you buy and always make sure you view a number of vehicles before making your decision too.
