Five Steps to Better Home Security for Pittsburgh Homeowners

Living in Steelers country is definitely quite happy for many people, especially those who prefer Pittsburgh's balance of metropolitan and cosmopolitan with a more welcoming small-town feel. But while knowing the best place to pick up a hot dog or see a rock band on Saturday night might be just another part of one's Pitt personality, there are tons of homeowners who are experiencing a bit of bewilderment with rising crime rates. Not violent occurrences, but more breaking and entering, prompting a bit of concern about just how to handle home security for residents in neighborhoods across the city.

Fortunately, making the proper adjustments to avoid being targeted during a shaky economy is a breeze. Aside from common-sense moves in safeguarding one's home, here are five steps to better home security for Pittsburgh homeowners to use, no matter the reason. And unlike so much advice out there, these don't involve investing an arm and a leg in gadgets or spending hours revamping some obscure part of the house.

#1 - Remove important items from the car while it sits outside. This might not seem like an obvious focal point for taking care of a home, but the fact is that people often target cars, rather than trying to break in while it's obvious that people are home. So don't leave cell phones, laptops, or anything that would be devastating to have stolen inside the car. And of course, don't leave the keys in the ignition, even if it happens to be parked inside a garage!

#2 - Actually use your home security system. Whether it's due to the fact that not everyone in the house knows how to set the alarm or simply a lapse in habit that has led to the alarm sitting there unused, it's no excuse, especially with crime rates on the rise. Don't waste money by having invested in something that's designed to help, and then refusing to even use it in the first place.

#3 - Know roommates. This is increasingly important, as it's tough to keep out crime if you're subletting a room or dealing with roommates who seem to always be short on cash. If someone seems like a sketchy roommate, or one who isn't going to be able to keep up with their half of expenses, then consider what a burden it could be to your home security and pocketbook, and get them out of there.

#4 - Talk to your neighbors. Because it's a crime that more people don't actually make the effort to at least realize who belongs hanging out on the front stoop next door and who might be plotting something. Try to make an effort to be friendly to neighbors, and experience considerably less stress when it comes to interaction with the rest of the block.

#5 - Pay attention to the second floor. Too often, homeowners remember to keep shrubs trimmed and windows shut and locked on the main floor of a home, but when it comes to upstairs, don't make the same changes. Robbers sometimes prefer the second floor, especially on the back half of the house where it's tougher to get caught breaking in. So don't forget to make home security a priority for all levels of the house.
