Five Technologies to Improve Your Smile

Five Technologies to Improve Your Smile

It was only film stars, celebrities and the rich who used to have a gleaming set of perfect teeth. As a result of the latest progress in dental technology more and more people can afford to avail themselves of new techniques. Private dental insurance will cover the majority of dental treatments apart from most purely cosmetic procedures.

When you smile, your teeth are the most obvious thing to be noticed and the reason we want a mouthful of pearly whites. Your looks, confidence and self-esteem are all improved by the possession of a wonderful smile. White teeth can be achieved in other ways than brushing.

Brushing and flossing is necessary to remove all the debris from between the teeth and stop decay, but teeth naturally discolour over time and it's the discolouration we strive to remove.

Below are my top five technologies for gaining that improved smile.

Of all the recent vast improvements in teeth whitening products my favourite is bleaching. They are not usually covered under dental insurance plans, but there are many inexpensive products on the market nowadays.

The most popular and affordable method of whitening teeth short of visiting the dentist is the use of hydrogen peroxide. Products that can be bought off the shelf cannot solve all dental problems. Anyone with damaged teeth should check with their dentist before applying any kind of tooth whitening product.

My second choice is a more recent innovation for whitening teeth: power bleaching using laser technology. Power bleaching with a laser is available as a cosmetic procedure in most dentists' offices. Because lasers use light energy they are less painful and can deal with cold sores, crown lengthening and decay removal without sutures.

My third choice is dental resin. An amalgam of silver and mercury has been the standard filling material for over a hundred years. Because it was the only option, we lived with it and the inherent problems. Further problems result from the fact that the metal expands and thereby causes cracks in the tooth enamel. These cracks are such that the filling drops out or, if it remains, provide the ideal crevice in which bacteria can flourish. Over time, the silver corrodes and turns black making the tooth unsightly. The current practice is to use a paste of glass particles in a plastic resin. Such a filling need not be evident since it can be made to match exactly the colour of the surrounding teeth. The revolution in cosmetic improvements includes more than just having clean white teeth. Neither oral hygiene nor digestion is helped by the possession of badly aligned teeth even though such teeth can be charmingly distinctive.

Number four on my list are tooth veneers. Veneers are the dentists' first choice for rectifying badly shaped or coloured teeth. Misshapen teeth can be corrected or built up to look normal by the use of veneers. The veneer is a thin piece of porcelain similar in size to a fingernail. After the process of adhesion is complete the bond remains remarkably strong.

Dental implants represent the last but not the least item on my list. If you ever need such treatment, some of the cost should be covered if you buy dental insurance.

As we age it often becomes necessary to acquire a third set of teeth. If properly looked after, our permanent teeth, which follow the loss of our baby teeth, should last a very long time. For whatever reason, we may need to start wearing dental prosthetics (false teeth). As we get older our false teeth cease to fit properly and will therefore need replacing every twelve years or so. A great alternative is dental implants.

A dental implant is replacement for a tooth's root and is surgically implanted in the jawbone. As the body heals, the bone around the implant fuses to the implant. Crowns and bridges can be anchored by the use of such implants.

Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in the last few years, whether it is surface whitening, implants or major reconstruction. Having a whiter brighter smile is now largely within everyone's budget thanks to recent technological advancements.
