Fixing A Wet Laptop Keyboard
Laptop replacement parts arent that easy to come by
. Even if you do manage to get ahold of them, they can still prove to be rather expensive. Laptops are, by design, very rigid in upgradability, limiting a users options for laptops spare parts. While this is most apparent when it comes to essential internal hardware like motherboards, hard drives, and GPUs, external hardware like keyboards, batteries, and LCD screens arent spared either. When a user is in need of these external laptop components, they will have to purchase authentic, pricey replacements (no OEM parts for laptops); or else turn to sites like eBay where faulty products are a possibility.
Now, say you spilled something on your laptops keyboard and it went on the fritz. Do you try your luck with an eBay purchase, do you go buy a most-probably-overpriced original laptop part, do you have it repaired professionally, or (*gasp!*) do you purchase a new laptop altogether?
Im here to tell you that theres another option where you dont need to spend a single cent.
First Things First
Before you begin fixing your laptops keyboard, make sure that you turn off your machine first. This may seem pretty straightforward (and unnecessary), but believe me when I say that many people have fallen prey to the neglect of this simple step, whether intentionally or otherwise.
If not done, any liquid which may seep in and come in contact with exposed
laptop parts may quite possibly short your gadget out.
Soak Up the Excess Liquid
Using a small towel, wipe the laptop dry (or as dry as possible) by letting the towel absorb the excess liquid. Simple as that. This makes the whole process significantly easier.
Drain Out the Rest
After wiping your laptop off, put the towel on a flat surface (preferably a tabletop), lift your laptop up, tilt it gently to one side, and let the water run off onto the towel. You may tilt the laptop from side to side and rotate it slowly if need be to really cover all the bases. Just remember not to move your laptop violently, as this will only serve to let the liquid slosh around some more inside your gadget and possibly come in contact with even more
laptop components.
Use Your Hair Dryer
Dry off the last remaining (and presumably unreachable) liquid using a hair dryer. Make sure to let the air blow in between those tight spaces to really get at it. Also, make sure that your hair dryer is set to cool, as anything higher than that could very possibly melt the laptop components inside your gadget, rendering the computer irrevocably damaged.
The Hardest Part
Now all you need to do is to wait for a couple of days to really ensure total dryness. You never know; there is always the chance that you didnt get everything. This is especially true if what you spilled on your laptop was something thicker than water like starchy soups or sugary drinks. Two days or so of waiting should be enough before you can turn on your laptop again.
And Done
There you have it: An easy, costless, and painless (if waiting doesnt hurt you as much) way to fix a wet keyboard. Happy DIY-ing!
