Fixing Leaks In Aluminum Gutters

Cleaning gutters is one thing

Cleaning gutters is one thing. Fixing leaks is another. When gutters are clogged cleaning is important because collected water can cause a range of problems like water damage and, believe it or not, leaky gutters. Its an opportunity to fix two things at once.

However, once the leaks already exist water damage is imminent. Depending on where the leak is dripping water could fall on a window ledge, door step, or basement window seeping inside cracks and flooding. It could also damage roofs and siding.

That said, its important to know what to look for when searching for a leak. Aluminum gutters leak from the seams, which generally are at ends and corners, and sometimes from holes where water collected and rusted through. Where water is dripping one of these has probably occurred.

If leaks are found, the first thing to do is clean out the gutter, especially where the water is dripping. The drops may not look like much but over time youll feel it in your wallet after its too late.

Now, here are a few things youll need for fixing leaks: a scrub brush, a sponge, detergent, paper towels or dry rags, ladder, putty knife, and one of the following: sealer, roof cement, aluminum patch, or waterproof glue.

If the leak occurs by seams, joints, or any other places where two parts meet do the following:

1.Clean the area well with the sponge and detergent.

2.Remove any debris.

3.Make sure its clean.

4.Soak up any excess water or flush it into the down spout.

5.Dry the area with the leak well.

6.Apply sealer over the area follow instructions for the brand you chose.

If the leak is due to a hole do the following:

1.Clean the area well with sponge and detergent.

2.Remove any debris; make sure its clean.

3.Soak up any excess water or flush it into the down spout.

4.Dry the area with the hole.

5.Here you can do one of several things:

Apply a patching compound to the hole

Apply roofing cement

Take a thin aluminum patch cut appropriately, apply waterproof glue, and paste the patch over the hole.
