Flat beds on planes are the best invention since the seat-back in flight entertainment system
. Everyone knows that sleeping on a plane is difficult but with seats that can fully recline in the completely flat position, you can get a full night's sleep.
While not many airlines offer the completely flat seats as standard, and increasing number of trans Atlantic and trans Pacific routes like flights from San Francisco to Auckland realize that there is great demand for the ability to seat on a plane and that airlines can make a lot of money, especially from business class travellers. These travellers are able to catch up on sleep during the journey, and be fresh ready for meetings or conferences.
They will not suffer so much from jet lag by sleeping in their destination's time zone and they will be able to make swifter decisions when they have arrived. Flights from New York to Atlanta are unlikely to ever offer flat beds. But with so many people wanting to sleep on planes I don't see why they shouldn't offer a new type of seating arrangement where a triple bunk beds are available.
Even flights from Washington to Montreal could benefit from having somewhere that people can catch a few hours sleep. I'd certainly be willing to pay a surcharge. For now there simply is not a way to make this sort of seating arrangement something that can make profit for the aircraft. Flat beds use so much space that fitting them all in without passengers paying any addition fees just does not make business sense right now. Until then, you'll have to upgrade to enjoy a fully-flat reclining bed. If you're flying to Dubai then you can even had the opportunity to fly and sleep in your very own suite. Probably not worth the expense, but lots of fun.
