Not one to normally rant, when it comes to anything I write, but today is the day for having one. The Daily Mail online published an article on a new type of bra, which it is claimed is the answer to the hourglass figure, inspired by Mad Men. Now this is something I hope I know a little about and lingerie to help create the hourglass figure and at the same time lingerie that has that retro look that so many women are looking for can be found in many ways, with for me the leading lights being the Charnos Hourglass range, and the Kiss Me Deadly Vargas range.

This particular bra, named 'Flatter Me'has deeper wings than normal, that are bonedto help prevent as they put it unsightly bra bulge by smoothing them out. Great I have no problem with that, however, you have to ask yourself how are these unsightly bra bulges caused in the first place. The answer is without doubt badly fitted bras, which this particular article highlights in a most spectacular way by showing the same model wearing a normal bra and the new 'Flatter Me' bra. Now I don't want to fall foul of anyones copyright, so I am not publishing the photos her, but if you click on this link you will be able to see exactly what I'm talking about. The comparison shot of the model wearing a normal bra, shows the model wearing a bra that is far too small for her, the centre does not sit flat against the chest wall and not only is her breast bursting out to create the unsightly bulge that the article wanted to portray but you can see the outline of her breast under the mesh on the wing of the bra. It begs the question where was this girl fitted to be wearring such a badly fitted bra?

Most of you will know that I regularly advise people to get themsleves fitted at a small local independent lingerie shop as the fittersare generally, better trained,more experiencedand more consistent in their fitting, than those of the high street department stores and some of the chain stores, where measuring as opposed to fitting is more the norm and where within the industry there is a reputation for often getting the fit badly wrong. So if you are bulging out of your bra, what you need is a properly fitted bra, not a different type of bra that hides the problem.

So if you are inspired by Christina Hendricks in Mad Men and want to have that hourglass figure, a bra with deeper wings, won't necessarily give it to you.You only have to watch the programme to see the long line bras,the deep briefs and the corsellettes to realise thatthe Mad Men look, with it's hourglass silhouette can not be created by a bra with deeper wings to smooth out bulges.
