For Rural Areas, High Speed Internet Has Arrived

Satellite internet isn't a new kid on the block, but it is certainly gaining popularity due to the fact that it solves one major problem for a specific group of internet users those who live and work in remote or rural areas.

Internet providers have been reluctant to expand into those areas because of the expense of infrastructure for a relatively small group of potential customers. As a result, internet users have had to rely on the slow connection and response of dial-up. With satellite internet, though, technological advances now allow for broadband performance up to 1.5Mbps.

Other than greatly increased speed, major benefits of satellite internet include the simplicity of installation and the minimal equipment needed. There is no terrestrial equipment necessary -- no cables and posts. The user needs only a satellite dish and a satellite modem. Installation by a professional is quick and seamless.

Currently there are two major satellite internet providers, HughesNet High-Speed Internet, and WildBlue. Both offer a variety of packages based on the needs of the user. There are packages tailored to the casual internet user, to businesses that rely on consistent and efficient connection, to those who virtually live in front of their computers. HughesNet deals can be found through affiliates and other sites, making the service less expensive.

Despite the technological advances of satellite internet, however, there remains one disadvantage. For gamers and those who use VoIP, latency (how much time it takes for data to get from one designated point to another) remains an issue. The signal travels a long distance to the satellite, creating a slight delay that is virtually imperceptible to the standard internet user, but noticeable enough to the gamer who relies on quick response.

Continual advances will improve satellite internet technology, ensuring that the needs of every internet user will be addressed.
