Forms Of Alopecia And Possible Hair Therapy Treatments For Baldness

Both men and women can suffer from hair lossmale pattern baldness (M.P.B.) for men and female pattern baldness (F.P.B.) for women

. Baldness, or more technically, alopecia, is the partial or complete loss of hair, primarily affecting the scalp. Baldness may spread over the entire head, or it may occur only in spots. Known causes of alopecia include hereditary factors, aging, diseases affecting the entire body, scalp disorders, ionizing radiation, and reaction to drugs.

Alopecia also comes is two main forms. Alopecia aerata is baldness that occurs in patches. It happens in a rather rapid manner and often involves one side of the head more than the other. Alopecia aerata affects both males and females. This type of hair loss is different than male pattern baldness, which is an inherited condition. On the other hand, alopecia totalis is an autoimmune disorder where there is a total loss of all head hair, i.e. complete baldness.

The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 3 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month during this phase. About 90% of the hair on your scalp is growing at this point in time. About 10% of the hair on your scalp, at this moment, is in a resting phase. After 3 to 4 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place. It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, if you are experiencing excessive shedding and hair loss, then you might have M.P.B. or F.P.B.

Baldness can become embarrassing for most people, especially women since a womans hair is her crowning glory. Fortunately, hair loss treatments are now available in the market, making the effects of alopecia less serious and stressful. Some hair loss therapy comes in forms of hair topical treatments, medication, and the use of hair restoration equipments.

It remains a fact that only two hair loss treatments have been approved by the FDA and both can be classed as strong drug-based medications. Propecia (finasteride) is the treatment of choice for many men because it has been consistently observed to work. It is a powerful drug, taken orally, that inhibits the formation of DHT in the system, eventually to a level that is sufficiently low to encourage a normal growth cycle. Rogaine (minoxidil) acts differently in that it stimulates hair growth in both men and women by overriding the prevailing hair loss symptoms. These drugs can be used either on their own or in combination. Women should seek professional medical advice before using Propecia because the effects could be different for women. These drug and hair topical treatments are the least invasive forms of hair restoration treatment for both male and female pattern baldness.

Many hair restoration methods involve minor surgery. In a hair transplant, for instance, the surgeon removes small pieces of the scalp that are still growing hair, usually around the sides and back of the head. The surgeon then relocates them to a bald or thinning area.

Another hair restoration method is called tissue expansion. A small device known as a tissue expander is placed beneath a place on the scalp that still bears hair. This hair-bearing place must be located next to a bald area. The tissue expander causes the skin to produce new, hair-bearing skin cells. The surgeon then neatly draws the expanded skin over the bald spot.

Ask your doctor which hair therapy treatment suits your condition. Baldness doesnt have to be a big problem. Know your options and ask your doctor about it.
