Forms Of Thermal Energy

Forms of Thermal Energy

Forms of Thermal Energy

Thermal Energy is the part of the internal energy of a system which is the total present kinetic energy resulting from the random movements of atoms and molecules.

The ultimate source of thermal energy is the sun, the huge thermo-nuclear furnace that supplies the earth with the heat and light that are essential to life. The cause of this huge thermal energy is the nuclear fusion in the sun. The thermal energy from the sun reaches earth in the form of radiation. It is called heat. Heat is thermal energy in transfer. Temperature is a measure of thermal energy of something. The higher the temperature, the faster the molecules move around and/or vibrate, which means the more kinetic and potential energy the molecules have.

Sensible energy and latent energy together termed as thermal energy.

Sensible Energy : Forms of Thermal Energy

Sensible heat is energy that is related to a change in temperature.

The quantity or magnitude of sensible heat is given by the product of the body's mass, its specific heat capacity and its temperature above a reference temperature.

Sensible energy is the portion of the internal energy of a system associated with kinetic energies (molecular translation, rotation, and vibration; electron translation and spin; and nuclear spin) of the molecules.

Latent Energy: Forms of Thermal Energy

Latent heat is the energy that can be released by a phase change, such as the condensation of water vapour.

Latent energy is the internal energy associated with the phase of a system.

The latent heat is the amount of energy released / absorbed by a chemical substance during a change of state that occurs without changing its temperature, meaning a phase transition such as the melting of ice or the boiling of water

Geothermal Energy: Forms of Thermal Energy

Geothermal energy is the Thermal energy contained in the earth. It can directly supply heat or can be converted to mechanical or electrical energy.

The power is obtained by using heat from the interior of earth.

Most of the geothermal resources are in regions of active volcanoes. Hot water springs or wells and geysers are the other sources.

One of the most significant and interesting forms of exploiting geothermal energy is the production of electrical energy. Here, Hot water and steam from Earth is used for initiation of generators, there are no harmful emissions of gases to the atmosphere and only water steam gets released.

Geothermal energy is also used in agriculture. Water from geothermal reservoirs is used for growth of flowers and vegetables. When heating greenhouses, the soil on which plants grow, is also heated up along with the air.

Heating is another interesting form of exploiting geothermal energy.

Heat pumps are use of the geothermal energy. Here the geothermal energy is used for circulation of geothermal liquid which is later used for heating, cooling, cooking and preparation of hot water.

Biomass Thermal Energy: Forms of Thermal Energy

Thermal energy or heat, can be produced from woody biomass.

Burning fuel, forest slash, or wood chips in a wood-fired boiler for use in either space heat (the use of thermal energy to heat an enclosed space or building) or process heat (the use of thermal energy to provide heat for a step in an industrial process, such as drying lumber). Woody biomass can also be manufactured into densified wood products like wood pellets, bricks and logs, that are then burned in industrial boilers or specifically-designed residential stoves.

Biomass for thermal energy is up to 90% efficient where as using biomass for the production of electricity is up to 40% efficient.

Biomass is the renewable Energy from Plants and Animals

Biomass is organic material made from plants and animals. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun's energy through photosynthesis. The chemical energy in plants is obtained to the animals and human beings when they feed on plants.

The chemical energy in biomass is released as heat, when burned. If there is a fireplace, the wood burned in it is a biomass fuel. Wood waste or garbage is burned to produce steam for making electricity, or to provide heat to industries and homes.
