Four New Techniques For Colorado Fishing Walleye

Colorado boasts many lakes, rivers, and reservoirs that are stocked full of walleye

. Knowing where to find these tasty fish is the first step towards landing that trophy. But, knowing where they are is not enough to guarantee that you will have a successful day. You need to know where they are during certain times of the day and the year, as well as different methods of catching them. Following are a few different techniques to keep in mind when fishing for walleye in Colorado:

Spring fishing: Walleye spawn in the spring which means that they will head closer to shore or shallow areas such as rocky points, gravel ledges, and sunken islands. They may also choose to spawn near the mouths of feeder streams and rivers. Walleye will also choose spawning beds in current breaks near dams and bridge abutments. In the morning hours, you will be more likely to catch trophy females in water as shallow as 2 to 4 feet. As the day progresses, these larger fish will move towards deeper waters. Use brighter jigs and spoons, such as pink, orange, and red in the spring. When you retrieve your cast, use quick, jerky, uneven movements. Walleye will strike both to protect their spawning beds and out of hunger. These bright colors will entice the fish to attack more often. I would recommend fishing from shore rather than by boat in the spring.

Summer fishing: Once the heat of summer arrives, you will have to change your walleye fishing tactics. While walleye prefer the shallows in spring, they tend to head out to deeper waters and weed beds in the summer. This is because they are very sensitive to light and try to escape the bright rays of the sun. When fishing in summer, use more neutral and natural colors such as black, white, brown and silver. Moving to deeper water usually means using heavier jigs so that you can get your bait lower in the water. This depends on the depth of the water you are fishing. Another recommendation is that you should tip your jugs with live minnows. If you salt them first, you will find that your success rate will increase. Although they are more aggressive during the morning hours, walleye can get lazy in the summer heat so you will want to retrieve a little more slowly and evenly. If you are fishing near weed beds, don't cast directly into the weeds. Rather, cast or troll just outside instead.
