FINDING the right outfit for a New Year's Eve party will drive fashion-savvy shoppers
to spend more than $6 billion in the post-Christmas sales, the nation's peak retail industry body says.
Shoppers in Victoria are expected to spend $1.67 billion during the two weeks of post-Christmas sales from Boxing Day through to early January.
Clothing and footwear would be the most sought-after items when stores open for the annual sales rush on Boxing Day, Australian Retailers Association executive director Russell Zimmerman said.
"Fashion generally will be (the) big items," Mr Zimmerman said.
Women especially would be looking for a new ensemble ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations.
"They want the right outfit to look great for the New Year's Eve party.
"The shoes, the dress ... jewellery," he said.
He said the sales shoppers would include those who waited to finish their Christmas shopping.
"Crowds are always expected when consumers head to the shops for the post-Christmas day bargains but this year's savvy shoppers will include the 8.6 per cent of consumers who will finalise their Christmas shopping during the Boxing Day period," Mr Zimmerman said.
The ARA expects registers around Australia to ring through $6.77 billion in post-Christmas sales.
