Having a gym membership is great, but often its not enough to get people motivated to work out

, and in this economy when were all try to save money gym memberships can seem expensive. But not going to the gym doesnt mean you cant exercise! There are plenty of free ways you can exercise and still lose weight!

Yard work can be a great way to lose weight without spending any money, because it has to be done anyway. Mowing your lawn, weed-whacking the trim, weeding a flower bed, and tending a vegetable garden are all chores that have physical exercise built in, so take advantage of these double duty activities.

Walking might not seem like much exercise, but it certainly adds up throughout the day. Take a walk during your lunch break. If the post office or grocery store is within walking distance of your home or office, run your errands on foot instead. Take the dogs for a walk or walk down the street to visit a neighbor. Better yet, take an evening stroll around the neighborhood. Its great exercise and a great way to meet other people who are also out exercising or enjoying the evening on their porch.

Dont waste your TV time. If you have a treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical machine, hop on it while you watch. Make a rule that you cannot watch TV unless you exercise for a certain portion of the show. Bicep curls and lunges are also things you can do while still keeping your eyes glued to the set. You could also take advantage of the downtime during commercials to do other exercises like push-ups or crunches.


Parking farther away is probably one of the easiest ways to squeeze a little exercise into your daily routine. Carrying your groceries or other purchases back out to your car is great exercise. Another tip would be to carry a basket instead of using a cart unless youre loading up on groceries. Even a short grocery list can give you a little arm workout when youre carrying it instead of pushing it. Also, take the stairs whenever possible. Dont bother waiting for the elevator, when the stairs will be just as quick and will provide you with a little workout too.
