eProcurement became the buzz word of the technology world in the late 1990's

. It was discovered that you could automate whole cumbersome and expensive processes using the very latest platform independent software tools and companies such as Ariba and SAP amongst others, brought to market some really sophisticated and powerful solutions. The enterprise wide solutions instantly changed the way larger companies bought their core and non core goods and services.

Instantly, whole catalogues were available at a single stroke, and governed by preset business rules, it was possible to decrease costs and manage inventory in a much more collaborative way. Studies carried out by CommerceOne, another major vendor, demonstrated that a large company could spend 100 times the face value of a pencil on process and hidden costs. Eprocurement was the answer and virtually every large company and government body now uses some form of enabled platform for buying, compliance and fulfilment. Really good systems incorporate supply chain management and post inventory support such as warranty and insurance management.

Lot's of good reasons for implanting a solutions in many businesses. Of course, there is also a cost factor involved, and this is the prohibitive part for SME's. Most of the large software houses are geared up to work with the major consulting firms as resellers and as such implementing an enterprise wide e-procurement solution can be daunting and expensive.

There is a new breed of vendor that uses the SaaS model ( Software as a service) and you only pay on a usage basis, but these are very general services and not usually geared to a single organisation.

Managed solutions offer to bridge that gap and the flexibility offered by such a solution can instantly impact on a business in a positive way by saving time, stripping out excessive cost and aggregating spend in order to leverage lower prices from suppliers.

I am of the opinion that this type of software should not be exclusive, it should be inclusive. I also believe it should be free and as such my company has developed a simple e-procurement solution for Dentists and Beauty salons that is free to us, lowers costs instantly and will soon include incumbent suppliers and their catalogues. This means the user can buy from their usual suppliers and probably enjoy lower prices due to the aggregation of spend across the whole application

We will soon be adding catalogues from consumables suppliers that will automatically compare prices and offer alternatives based on price and product type. There is no training or implementation required and it is a zero cost to adopt solution that has an instant and measurable effect on your business. Money savings aside, the time savings are also significant, meaning less money spent on the process of actually buying the stuff that your business needs to operate. We intend to enlarge the catalogue to include non core items such as stationary, services and more.

We plan to release free front end applications that allow you to integrate the whole of your business into one touch point solution that will drive out inefficiencies and lower costs further. Look out for announcements next year on the I-Vis suite.
