Fringe' ratings hit another new low -- blame basketball

?

"Fringe" was the only scripted program Friday night to air a new episode, so it's not really fair to judge its ratings versus any other program in this category. What we can do is look instead at the factors leading to this smaller viewer count.

First, we have the NCAA tournament. A good many people in "Fringe's" audience (though surely not all of them) are in similar demographics to those who watch sports, and there may have been a few people tuning in to other channels across the board with their favorite sci-fi show set to DVR.

We also cannot underestimate the force of Daylight Savings Time. Nearly every show across the board took a hit of some form this week, as many people are choosing to stay outside longer versus coming in and watching television. (This is a trend that has happened for years now -- 2011 is no exception.)

So is Fox pulling open the trap door? Remember that these ratings for Fridays are still better for the network than they were in the fall -- a number of executives have expressed support for "Fringe," and will likely keep it so long as they feel it will perform well enough financially (as it costs a great deal more to air this than a show like "Kitchen Nightmares").

We will have some more updates on Fringe's fate.
