Frost-free freezers and automatic defrosting fridges are very popular as they are extremely convenient

. There are two main components that achieve this, a heater (yes, in your fridge), and an evaporator. This is a tray on top of the compressor that gets pretty hot and evaporates any water. The heater is used to defrost the fridge; it melts the ice at the back of the fridge, this is why you can always see either beads of ice or water at the back of your fridge (provided it is working correctly).

When the ice on the back wall melts it runs down into a channel. It is then directed through a hole out through to the back and runs into the evaporator tray, where it is evaporated. Cold air has to be blown around the compartment with a fan motor as the evaporator is behind a back panel. The defrost cycle requires sensors and a timer to control everything. Because of this there is a lot more potential for something to go wrong than there used to be in old-fashioned conventional fridges. Despite this they are still fairly reliable.

Common problems with automatic defrosting fridges and frost-free freezers can include the following:

The evaporator freezing; this can happen if the door is left open for too long (particularly in humid conditions). True, this is a problem that older fridges were also subject to, but it did not have as greater an impact as you cant see the amount of ice that may have built up around the back panel hiding the evaporator. In many frost-free fridges the ice can form all the way around the fan and cause it to run slowly or even seize up completely. This of course will result in your fridge not staying cold. Prior to this, the fan may catch on the ice and make a high-pitched noise. Noticing this early on could save you a lot of time and money.

If you find that your fan has stopped working then unplugging the fridge and defrosting it manually will solve the problem, unfortunately this can take up to 12 hours, and even defrosting the evaporation plate can prove to be quite a task. Also, modern units use a thermal fuse to protect the defrost cycle, this means that you cant use a hairdryer to try and speed the process up. If you do find yourself with this problem reoccurring then it is likely that it is due to a faulty sensor.
