Fun And Simple Do-it-yourself Project: Transform A Loft Into A Seasonal Closet

Sometimes the idea of a loft space is better than the loft itself

. Frequently lofts can be odd-shaped spaces that are not particularly easy to access, and you can never quite figure out what to do with them. As you are pondering what to do with your very cool, but kind of unusable, loft space, consider turning it into a seasonal closet. You can't ever have too many closets in your home, you can always use one more. A loft can represent an entire area that can used for storage, regardless of short ceilings or oddly angled walls.

Cleaning.

Before you even try to design your new space clear everything out of the loft. If it is a space that you have not been using, typically it has become a repository for extra stuff. So clean out your loft, and take this opportunity to rid yourself of items that you no longer use or need. You may even come across a wall art metal, copper metal wall art or handmade metal wall art that you never got around to hanging; well, now is the time to hang it where you planned. Now turn your attention to your clothing closet and remove everything from there, also. Use this technique to clear out your unwanted clothing. Now is the best time to get rid of things you have forgotten about or no longer fit into. Of course you do not need to throw them away, you can divide your closet contents into four different stacks, one for charity, one for things you may want to sell, one for things you want to keep, and one for trash. Pack up everything but your keep pile, then go through that pile and divide it into two stacks. The loft area can be very useful in storing away clothing that you don't wear right now - your winter/summer wardrobe.

Maximizing Space.

Your design will be very unique to your space, but here are some general ideas of how you may want to configure your space. If you have a slanted ceiling and short walls, you may want to add long, hanging rods along each wall at a convenient hanging height. This will leave a space behind your hanging clothing that you can put into use for storing shoes, boxed items and boots. Keep your garments from becoming dirty by storing them in hanging garment bags or draping an old sheet over them. You also want to take care to properly store wool and fur clothing to keep moths and bugs from invading your garments.

Holiday Storage.

Depending on the size of your loft, if your clothes do not fill the space, you can use it to store other items as well. This may be a great place to store your holiday decorations in plastic bins. Instead of having them stored all over the house, they are easy to organize and retrieve right there in your loft.

Now instead of having a useless loft space that just collects junk in your house, you have created an organized and useful space that is a pleasure to use and it helps to keep your other closets organized and clutter free as well.
