There was a time when every child believed in Santa Claus, and it was almost impossible to sleep knowing that on Christmas Day morning there would be a stocking full of toys, a big stocking and more often a pillow case. A new pair of shoes was something to break in, and avoid getting blisters from in the process. But that was before we were exposed to fashion and the marketing and advertising industries that promoted their clients' brands.

The toys of yesteryear have been replaced by fashion wear and computer games.

This has happened over a few decades perhaps because during that time expectations have risen. A family car, television, washing machine, refrigerator and microwave, all are regarded as necessities. The number of satellite television dishes is clear for everyone to see, levels of affluence have risen.

It has taken a change in attitude within society. At one time the woman of the house was precisely that, of the house; her role was housekeeper, cook and mother, and the family budget was dependent on the earning capacity of her husband. That is no longer the case with both partners often working, sometimes the woman in a much more high powered job than her spouse. There are nurseries for the children and baby sitters because the woman rightly demands the same leisure time as her husband.

Households may now have two cars and a computer is a necessity; perhaps desktop and a laptop. Foreign holidays with the advent of air travel on a mass scale have replaced the seaside boarding houses and holiday camps that were the preferred and sometimes only choice of their parents.

Children seem to grow up quicker, though the expression to grow up does not necessarily also mean mature earlier. But the growing up, and the expression of maturity takes the form of clothing created by the fashion industry to match the finest that celebrity is wearing, colorful and stylish, the same with footwear, Gabor shoes, Gabor selecting a colorful range to match the bright colors of clothes.

The pace of advancement has slowed in the West however with many of the activities which created its wealth being switched to other parts of the world where labor may be cheaper and more flexible. Further education now comes at a cost and jobs are not the divine right anymore and job security always a factor.

Those luxuries which became necessities may be harder to come by in the future.
