Gaining Control Of Binge Eating

People who binge can spend so much time thinking about what they would like to eat;

what they shouldn't eat; or what they ARE eating, that they begin to lose sight of who they really are, what they want and what they deserve in life. Instead, food and binging start to define them.

Binge eating is very different to just over-eating. People who binge regularly may - or may not - be overweight; but, either way, binge eating becomes the enemy that they seek to control. Unfortunately, the eating begins to control them, determining what they do, when they do it, with whom - and how. Thoughts of food seep insidiously into more and more corners of their lives.

What starts as out of control eating can become out of control living.

Food can become the enemy and ordinary places and activities can seem like warzones for those who are binging. An outing, a birthday, a coffee with friends, spending a night at home alone, workplace celebrations - can all be monumental battles with binge eating. Binge eaters start changing their lives to avoid the drama and binging can become a source of secrecy and subterfuge, whilst food is the subject of much counting and calculating.

Those who suffer will have food on their mind more and more often - and the more steps they take to gain 'control' of the 'out of control' eating the worse it gets.

It is frustrating and increasingly stressful for people who binge eat because there is associated guilt and shame. What can make it worse is that they do not understand why they cannot stop. They may seem confident and capable on the outside; but often lack confidence or control in at least one other key area of their lives. This might be expressed as an over-zealous desire to please or to achieve unrealistically high expectations.

When they start making empowered changes in other areas of life, food becomes what it is - ordinary, normal, natural. The moment food stops being the focus, it stops being the enemy; and when it stops being the enemy, it loses its power to control and the binging stops.
