The hormonal fluctuations in menopause can be overwhelming to most women, and is the overall reason for the increase in weight gain. The hormones job is of being responsible for the metabolism, appetite and general storage of fat within the body. When the declining levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, are apparent in menopause, it makes it very difficult to maintain the desired body weight.
Knowing that menopause is a normal stage in all woman's lives, it is possible to help our bodies combat what they naturally want to do, with diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
Eating a diet that is well balanced with whole foods and grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats and lower fat dairy is an excellent start. Soy products have also helped many women, especially with hot flashes. Foods that are high in antioxidants ( known as the super foods) have the ability to "reverse" many signs of aging, and make us feel so much more balanced. Talk to your doctor about vitamin and mineral supplements that would be most beneficial, as you proceed through this time in your life. Your physician is there to be your friend, to help in anyway that they can.
Exercise is a great daily dose of energy, especially to the menopausal woman. It not only helps keep the weight down, but it stimulates our body with good feeling endorphins. Incorporating a light weightlifting routine can also help keep muscles strong. Walking daily for at least 30 minutes, also has the benefits to reduce stress.
It is a good idea to cut back on caffeinated drinks, as well as, alcohol. While it has been proven that red wine is actually good for our hearts and is full of antioxidants, it is as important, to not overindulge. Limiting yourself to 1 or 2 glasses of red wine a day, will allow you the dose of its healthy goodness.
It is very important that when going through menopause, it is not the ending of your life, but a beginning of a new phase. A natural evolutionary process. With many new exciting chapters to create. Weight gain need not weigh heavily on your emotions. Through managing your symptoms, creating a better diet and exercising daily, one can have the necessary tools they need to handle this phase with grace.
