If you have seen an elephant - headed deity who rides a mouse

, you are looking at the most popular gods of the Hindus. This deity, known as Ganesha is the bringer of success and the reason everyone calls him the Lord of Success. If you are interested to know more about this deity and the explanation for the title Lord of success then it is best to learn more about him by reading the rest of the article.

He is one of the two sons of Parvati and Shiva, bless with an elephant head with big ears and trunk while born with a human body that looks like a huge pot. Aside from being the Lord of Success, he is also known to be the destroyer of obstacles and evil. Added to that, his other titles are the gods of wealth, wisdom, knowledge and education.

His elephant head is the symbol of the soul, which is a human's supreme reality of existence while his body signifies human earthly existence. His head refers to wisdom and his trunk represents cosmic reality. He possesses a goad on his right upper hand, which is what he uses to guide humans to the eternal path, and the noose on his left captures all difficulties.

The broken tusk that he holds on to his right lower hand symbolizes sacrifice while the rosary on the left hand means that knowledge should be endless. The sweet he holds with his trunk implies that people should discover for themselves the sweetness of life. His ears that are fan - like means that he is ready to hear petitions from his believers. The snake around his waist symbolizes different forms of energy. Lastly, he is also very humble by riding the lowest of all creatures which is the mouse.

Many people, usually tourists, wonder how Ganesha got an elephant head. One popular story is that the goddess Parvati made a boy using her body's dirt while she was taking a bath. He was ordered to guard the entrance of her bathroom and never allow anyone else to come in. When her husband, Shiva, returned he was angered to have a stranger blocking his way to the bathroom of his own wife. In anger, he struck the boy head off.

When Parvati heard of this, she broke down with grief! Shiva wanted to appease her so he sent his "gana" or squad to get a head of any sleeping form who is facing north. They came back with a severed head of an elephant, which they attached to the boy's body. Shiva returned his life, made him leader of his squad, and then gave him a boon to make people worship him before doing any task.

His many titles and position on shiva's squad as well as the love of Parvati made him blessed. This makes him a successful god, and the reason why everyone who believes in him can also share in his success.
