The UK energy market is now dominated by six energy suppliers British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, Scottish and Southern Energy and Scottish Power. Together they supply energy to over 98% of UK energy customers. A comparison site for gas and electricity enables people to compare all gas and electricity suppliers and switch to someone of their choice. Apart from the big six mentioned above there are other gas and electricity suppliers however the market share of these companies remains small. These smaller energy suppliers mainly specialise in green or ethical energy investment (such as Ebico, Green Energy UK, and Good Energy). However, Ofgem (the UK energy regulator) is concerned that the smaller providers have not as yet been able to effectively compete ewith the big six energy suppliers.

As the competition among the Gas and electricity suppliers increases, customers could see their energy bills drop further. It is therefore good for consumers that suppliers are continuing to offer new competitive online tariffs which provide customers with more choice and better savings. However, recent figures still suggest that just 5% of households are on online energy plans. This is quite a low figure given the fact that these plans can give consumers some of the biggest savings.

As of December 2010 price increases are back with British Gas, SSE, Scottish Power, and Npower all announcing price increases of up to 9%. EDF is holding standard prices until March. Therefore the sooner you switch the sooner you save! A lot of people will be able to save, for example if you are on a standard tariff or on anything other then a super cheap online billed deal.
