Gastric Bypass Surgery Helps to Curb Obesity in North Carolina

Roughly 22% of North Carolina's adults are obese, and almost 10% are suffering from diabetes. Many of these individuals have gone to great lengths to improve their condition: they experiment with various diets, try different workout routines and spend significant money on all kinds of weight loss products and programs. Some do experience success, while others fall short in reaching their goals and improving their health. For these people, a bariatric surgery procedure known as gastric bypass can provide healthy, long-lasting weight loss and even relief from diabetes symptoms.

Gastric bypass surgery leads to weight loss by reducing the amount of food the patient can eat and the number of calories absorbed into the stomach. In order to do this, a surgeon must staple a small section of stomach into a pouch which feeds directly into the Roux pouch of the intestines. If the patient does not adhere to a proper diet, the stomach pouch can stretch and lead to weight regain, but the new study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrates how the surgery can reduce the temptation to eat unhealthy.

The study in question was conducted at the Interdisciplinary Obesity Center at Kantonsspital St. Gallen in Rorschach, Switzerland. Dr. Bernd Schultes, who led the study, reported that gastric bypass surgery can help the body regulate what is called "hedonic hunger". Hedonic hunger is the urge to eat for reasons other than actual physical hunger, usually to relieve stress or to manage other emotions. The obese patient group observed who had recently undergone gastric bypass had much lower hunger urges than the obese group who had not undergone the procedure.

Many gastric bypass patients have demonstrated dramatic reductions in diabetes symptoms, some within days of the procedure. Studies have shown that roughly 80% of diabetics who undergo gastric bypass surgery enter into complete remission afterwards. People who have had to take nine insulin shots a day have reported that they can now live healthy lives without any diabetes medication at all.

For those in North Carolina who suffer from type-2 diabetes or other ailments linked to obesity, there is help available. Many board certified surgeons offer free seminars where one can learn valuable information including requirements for bariatric surgery, how to qualify through your insurance company and how to prepare for a weight loss procedure.
