Gbic Transceiver The New Age Fiber Optic Component
Communication is vital to every industrial sector and refers to
, transmission of data, information or messages across entities both external and internal to the corporate environment. The technological evolution has brought in a number of new and innovative methods like the use of the networks, World Wide Web and the cloud. All these networks work with the help of various telecommunications hardware and fiber optics components, which has evolved over the years to provide for faster transmissions of data.
GBIC, or GigaBit Interface Converter, is a fiber optic component that is used to transform between electric signals and optical fiber signals. The GBIC transceiver uses dual SC optical fiber interface and can fit to the GBIC slot on the switches or router. The Cisco GBIC transceivers meet the international standard specification and are used by many service providers. The
CWDM GBIC transceivers are ones that operate on a different wavelength and are compatible with all equipments.
The Coarse Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (CWDM) stands for an optical technol ogy, which is used for transmitting eight channels, of separate wavelength or color, over the same fiber strand. With wider spacing between the channels makes the CWDM technology relatively inexpensive for transmitting multiple Gbps. The multiplexing effect is achieved through filters which act as prisms. These filters routes the lights from many incoming/outgoing client ports to a common transmitting or receiving trunk port. This technology is ideally suited to solve problems of scaling bandwidth and breadth, while maintaining a low infrastructure investment, a problem faced by the enterprises and service providers incase of metroarea networks.
A CWDM filter from Cisco makes it possible to build various topologies. Moreover, this offers the users a choice between CWDM GBIC optics and SFP optics directly in switches and router ports. The GBIC transceivers operate at the gigabit Ethernet data rate, while the Cisco SFP transceiver operates at any rate from 622 Mbps. The advantages of using Cisco Transceivers are that it allows the user to go beyond the inherent capacity of 8 strands and facilitates manageability of the network. Further, these transceivers also pave way for simple and easy network configurations leading to saving resources and costs.
