Topical antibiotics containing erythromycin or those mentioned above can also be used, and these are applied locally to the affected areas. The over-the-counter (OTC) acne medications usually work well for people who are suffering from mild to moderate acne.
OTC medications can be purchased without a prescription, but it is still advisable that you start with lower dosages so as not to further irritate your skin. Since there are a lot of OTC acne medications to choose from, make sure that you purchase a reliable and trusted acne product.
People who have persistent acne eruptions and who are suffering from moderate to severe acne may have to look beyond over-the-counter acne medication. It would be best for them to seek the advice of a dermatologist. They will probably be prescribed stronger medications for the treatment and prevention of their acne condition.
Medications that are prescribed for severe and chronic acne usually contain adapalene, azelaic acid, clindamycin, erythromycin, and sodium sulfacetamide. Oral contraceptives as well as oral antibiotics may also be part of a severe acne treatment regimen.
