General Do It Yourself Pest Control Tips

Most of the country experienced a warmer winter this year in comparison with average winter temperatures

. For a do it yourself pest control, that can mean a spring and summer with higher pest numbers. Many residents in the Southern states are already seeing the effects of increased and earlier mosquito activity. What can the DIY pest controller do to combat the increase in pests?

The best course of action is to be proactive. April may be the prime month to begin your pest control regimen instead of waiting until pest populations are too difficult to manage. Begin reviewing your home for possible pest pitfalls. All regions of the country are not equal when it comes to which pest is your greatest worry, but there are general guidelines to review to minimize pest access to your home and yard.

For instance, do you have standing water anywhere in your yard? If so, fill them in with topsoil and create an adequate grade for proper drainage. Keep all possible water receptacles turned upside down. Repair leaky faucets and drainage for air condition units. When it comes to pests, moisture is your worst enemy. Minimize any areas with continued or excess water, in or outside of your home.

Take a walk around your home itself and inspect for any possible cracks in foundations, holes in screens, or unscreened ventilation. If tree branches or hedges are touching your home, cut them back. Flower beds should be a foot away from your homes foundation to keep additional moisture at bay. Pests really love the shade of mulches, so the last thing you want is to create a pleasant haven for them to multiply in up against the foundation of your home.

Use an insecticide perimeter spray that can act as a barrier to pest looking for residence.

On drier days, diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled in vegetable gardens as a non toxic way to keep pest numbers down.

Now is a good time to use a broad cast treatment if necessary for ant control in your yard, and granule treatments in your ornamental beds. It is easier to limit numbers now.

Spring clean the interior of your home using a high temperature steamer on upholstered furniture and beds as a precautionary measure of bed bug control or prevent flea eggs to hatch. Wash drapes and bedding on the high temperature cycle. Do a complete vacuuming of floors, baseboards, and areas where spiders might be a problem. Remember to empty the canister into a sealed bag before relocating to the waste bin.

Also, never forget, now is the time to give Fido a good scrub down and begin using flea preventative to minimize the possibility of flea infestations.

Follow these general tips to keep summer pests a thing of the past.
