Georgia Tech running back Anthony Allen stated that when his team had the 11-minute drive, they came to the line of scrimmage and saw that the Cavaliers were "dog tired." The confident running back continued to say he knew Georgia Tech had them right then. The Yellow Jackets controlled the clock on each of their four touchdown drives: a 10-play, 60-yard drive in the second quarter; the 10:47 drive that took forever; an 11-play, 66-yard march that put the game away in the fourth; and a 10-play, 71-yard finisher at the end of the game.
Virginia defensive lineman John-Kevin Dolce explained how hard it was to stop the Yellow Jackets. He said, "It's hard to play against them because they have all those different options." Georgia Tech (7-1, 5-1) snapped an eight-game Charlottesville losing streak, winning at Virginia for the first time since 1990. The Cavaliers (3-4, 2-1) had won three straight games before their loss to the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer rushed for 125 yards, Allen added 103 yards and had two touchdowns, and Josh Nesbitt ran for 82 yards and two scores. Although Nesbitt only threw eight passes, he hit Demaryius Thomas on a huge play, a 52-yard pass that set up a field goal that gave Georgia Tech a 13-6 lead at the break.
It took a little while for the option to develop since it was a wet day. The Yellow Jackets played sloppy football in the first seven minutes. They committed three penalties and blew two timeouts during that span. Georgia Tech continued to stumble throughout the first quarter by coughing up the ball three times. The first fumble happened when the Yellow Jackets muffed a punt they were lucky to recover. The second fumble occurred on a fake punt attempt and the last was bobbled by Nesbitt, which was recovered by Virginia. Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson admitted that his team was a little bit discombobulated in the first 10 minutes of the game. The coach told the press you just have to keep playing.
Virginia could not get in the end zone. Back-to-back drives that began in Georgia Tech's territory ended in field goals. Cavaliers coach Al Groh acknowledged that his team had their chances. He said, "We got out-executed at the point of attack a couple of times and had a decent play on third down that was well-defended... We have to do a better job of converting." Virginia had only 30 yards rushing and converted two of 11 third downs, which meant the Yellow Jackets' offense utilized every second they could. The final time of possession was 42:43 to 17:17. Virginia defensive lineman Zane Parr noted that his team failed to pick their tempo on big drives. He added that the Cavaliers were tired and did not step up their game.
