Geothermal Can Keep Humidity Within Reason With Whole House Dehumidification
Can a geothermal unit help you reduce the heat and humidity in your North Texas home
? The high heat and humidity of North Texas can be an oppressive combination, and can make even being at home uncomfortable.
While the humidity in a home -- say that five times fast -- can make the family feel like they are suffering, their comfort is not nearly as dramatic compared to the other harm and damage high humidity can cause.
It can create wet spots on the ceilings and walls, and can cause rotted wood and other structural damage to the home. Those wet spots also mean that water is gathering inside the drywall, which can eventually weaken it and turn it to powder. Too much humidity can also lead to allergies and asthma by causing mold, mildew, dust mite and bacteria growth. This is why closing up the house around May or June, depending on the local climate, to avoid humidity is important. (This is even why the windows shouldn't be opened up on nice days -- because the geothermal and HVAC systems have to work overtime to catch back up).
By far the best option for dealing with high humidity is to remove excess moisture from the air with a whole house dehumidifier integrated into a geothermal system. An air conditioner by itself may not sufficiently remove the moisture, and while portable dehumidifiers do remove the moisture, they are somewhat noisy, require frequent maintenance, and only dehumidify the air in the room where they are located.
To dehumidify an entire house with portables, it would require a unit in every room. Whole house dehumidification on a geothermal system quietly adjusts the humidity levels throughout the whole home with little effort on the home owners' part, and does so using less energy than the multiple portable units needed to do the same.
An air conditioner actually works by removing the humidity, but the "dry setting" on a geothermal system will do the same thing.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency says that interior humidity levels should be kept between 30 and 50 percent. This will allow home owners to avoid over cooling and keep their home at the appropriate temperature. It will also help prevent the conditions that cause structural damage to the home and the bacteria, dust mite, mildew and mold growth that could threaten the family's health.
It is important to have some moisture in the air. If a geothermal unit were set to keep humidity level below 30 percent, it would create new problems due to the air being too dry, so try to stay within the EPA's recommended range.
Installing a geothermal unit that has a dehumidification attachment on it can help keep a home's humidity setting at a safe and comfortable level. To find out more about geothermal HVAC systems, contact a licensed geothermal contractor.
