Hoard was one of the best multiplayer game released on the PlayStation last year. Now it arrives on the PSP, but the multiplayer component - what about hamsters - have been ripped out. It's still fun to terrorize the country and compete with computer-controlled kites, but the loss of multiplayer is disappointing.

Hamsters sit in the wings of a fire-breathing demon. Like all dragons, love you sweetie, and your one goal in life is to gather as much of it as you can before time runs out. By burning the towns, castles, and crops that you will reveal piles of gold that can be transported back to your nest. Get on your path, but will be archers protect cities, knights out to impress the princess, and other dragons, who have their own hordes to build. It all makes a great multiplayer game - on the PS3. Hamster PSP is a lonely affair. There is not even Leaderboards to send your score to.

Hoard left its multiplayer modes on the PSP.

Standard fighting in hamsters last 10 minutes and the dragon with the greatest treasure at the end of that 10 minutes is the winner. There are a few variations of this basic requirement as a survival mode and a cooperative game, but again, you work with computer-controlled kites.

Without multiplayer, some of the incentive to continue to play treasure is lost. The game is not damaged in any way, though, and there is still enjoyment to be had here. Dragons can attack each other, steal gold from enemy hordes and bully cities to send them regular offerings. There are some strategic opportunities for gamers: Would you go on the offensive and disturbing other dragons or just mind your own business and try to claim as much gold as you can? This is a nifty little game.

Every piece of gold you bring back to your cave will give you experience points that can be used to level up your dragon and make it faster, stronger and more powerful. There are a handful of stats you can choose to boost - another strategic decision for you to do - but no reason to stress over it because your dragon will be back on level 1 at the beginning of the next game.

There's nothing persistent on hoard except some stat tracking and no campaign to work through - everything you get in a fight that will be gone the next game, and there is no story to follow. It is designed for quick skirmishes that are quite funny, but as such, it is a somewhat limited experience. It is not much to look at, with a rather dull board game presentation that lacks personality.

Concluding remarks

Hoard is a refreshing little game that lets you be the bad guy for a change. Originally designed as a multiplayer affair, it is disappointing to see it reduced to a single-player experience. But burninating landscape is still a lot of fun.
