Get Out of Debt Grants - Scam or Blessing?

According to some unscrupulous marketers, all you have to do to get out of debt is reach out to the government for a grant to pay your bills

. Sounds like a nice idea--get into trouble financially and Uncle Sam can get you out of trouble. Get out of debt grants do not exist unfortunately. While the government does give out grants, they are for specific purposes and for specific organizations or populations.

For example, say you were a research scientist at a particular company, researching some new treatment option for cancer. As an organization, your company could apply for a scientific research grant. This grant would fund new equipment, necessary research supplies and maybe the salaries of you and your fellow researchers for a specified amount of time. In a sense, this may help you get out of debt. But otherwise, "get out of debt" grants do not exist. However, there are ways to free up some money to pay your debts on your own by making use of the grants that are given to organizations to help individuals.

Housing Assistance

The government awards housing grants to local housing authorities and organizations to assist residents with either keeping or finding homes. Programs, such as Section 8 or other low income programs, can help you get out of debt by providing housing for less money. Check with your local area for specific programs.

Energy Assistance

Another way to get out of debt using grants is to make use of energy assistance programs located in many towns and cities throughout the United States. They will either pay to have your home weatherized or they will pay your heating bills throughout the winter. Income limits do apply, so be mindful of this before you get started.

Food Assistance

The Department of Human Services in every state or county should be able to assist you with applying for food stamps or other types of food assistance. Because a food bill can be very large for many families, getting assistance with your groceries could help to free up money to pay off your debts.

Car to Work Program

Some states have what is called the "Car to Work" program. If you are having difficulties getting to work because of your car, you can get a grant from your local Human Services department to get a decent car. However, there are some limitations to this program, such as needing to stay in your job for at least three years, and be willing to give up the car should you not meet this requirement.

Getting Out of Debt

Get out of debt grants do not exist in the form that you may have heard about on late night infomercials. However, knowing where to go to find other types of assistance could help free up money to pay down your debts on your own. You must do the work and actually pay off your debts, while not blowing your freed up money on other things.
