The third Birthday is a response to Parasite Eve game in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but the choice not to call the Parasite Eve Samples III is a telling one. This third-person action adventure represents something of a fresh start for the striking heroine Aya Brea. Unfortunately, Aya's characterization here is a troubling one, and while some cool concepts contribute to occasional exciting gameplay, rigid controls and some annoying games makes this fight to save humanity as often frustrating as it is fun.

Aya Brea is no stranger to strange situations. She debuted in 1997's Parasite Eve Samples as an NYPD cop who was led turn-based battle against mitochondrial creatures that threatened Manhattan. It has been 11 years since the last Parasite samples Eve game was released, though, so even many who played them may have fuzzy memories of Aya's past adventures. But it is just as well because Aya begins The 3rd Birthday with no memory of her past life, and both story and gameplay bears so little connection to Parasite Eve games that no knowledge of them is needed to jump into this adventure.

The ability to jump from soldier to soldier is Aya's saving grace, and it is important to survive. Aya can transfer instantly from body to body, so dead soldier you have not necessarily spell death for you. You can use the soldiers up and abandon their shells in the last moments of their lives if there is another fighter on the pitch. Jumping around from person to person and from situation to situation is a fun and flashy mechanic that gives combat a distinctive feel. This ability also has an offensive component: If you sustain an attack on an enemy for a term, a triangle icon indicates that you can perform a overdive attacks, to send your psyche in a moment and do significant damage. You can more efficiently create openings for overdive attack by directing any nearby soldiers to concentrate their fire on your target in a short period. To trigger the coordinated attacks that the game requires crossfire, you need to lock on an enemy without firing a short time as a meter fills. Attacking enemies fills a second gauge that when it is full, you can enter a mode called liberation. The liberation movements are Aya dazzlingly fast, and true to the State's name, it makes for a liberating departure from her normally rigid actions. Unfortunately, this state is so short that you hardly have time to enjoy it before Aya returns to normal.

The third birthday sometimes succeeds in creating a high voltage. In a struggle, for example, enemy attacks seem overwhelming and circumstances seem hopeless. Your desperate attempt to survive is exciting and the tension that builds up is ultimately released in a very satisfactory way, when an armored vehicle arriving, so you can take control of his gunner, and reverse the trend, so short shrift to the creatures that just shortly before slaughter were soldiers left and right. It is an exciting moment. But often, that tension could boil over into full blown frustration. For example, in most situations a steady stream of reinforcements means that even if the soldier that you currently occupy is in bad shape, surviving long enough will let you jump to another, completely new body with full health (although survivors so long is often easier said than done). But a difficult fight in a place where reinforcements could not reach you can be frustrating. Monsters you face, like many people you encounter throughout the game, have a good portion of health, your attacks slowly chip away. They also have attacks that can wipe out all your health with a few hits and your stiff movements attempt to circumvent some of these attacks a frustrating affair. You can repeatedly find yourself approaching victory only to fail, and then face the prospect of starting the long, slow process of fighting them all again. This battle and others like it highlight the limitations of Aya's movement and can run all the momentum from the game. Success in these situations leads to a sense of relief in knowing that a painful step of your journey is over, rather than a reward of triumph.

As you progress from mission to mission, you earn experience and level up, which increases Aya's health and strengthen her overdive attacks. In addition, frequent use of a particular type of weapons - pistols, rifles or shotguns, for instance - gives you access to better weapons and weapons components of this type. You can buy and equip components that improve a weapon accuracy and capacity, as well as choose between ammo that does more damage, but triggers overdive avenues of attack less frequently and ammunition with the opposite characteristics. You can also collect items called OE chips you can equip to provide Aya various advantages such as increased defense and stronger cross-fire attacks. These customization options are not very deep or involving, but tinkering with Aya's arms and attributes provides a pleasant little diversion between missions.

Most of what you find on the menu protective sure does not look very protective.

Like his protagonist, 3rd The Birthday is beautiful and troubled, flawed and fascinating and frustrating. Furthermore, it is short; annoying difficulty of some sections means that the six episodes may take awhile to complete, but this issue aside, the adventure is about five hours long. Cheat codes to unlock when you finish the game and perform certain tasks, you can play games with enhanced abilities, although this is certainly not enough of an incentive to complete the game whopping 10 times, you'd need to unlock one of the cheats. The third Birthday has a fascinating history with an irritating heroine and unusual gameplay that makes for an occasionally thrilling, often undermined by rigid control and frustratingly difficult. Some will find lasting mistakes a tolerable price to pay to see Aya Brea's strange journey, but she has some serious growing up to do before her next birthday rolls around.

The third Birthday begins in a near-future New York that has been ravaged by creatures called Twisted. Aya Brea has been recruited by the Counter Twisted teams. Her role is to use a device called overdive system that sends her psyche into the past. Aya's consciousness is sent back to the times and places of special Twisted attack where she can have soldiers, changing the outcome of the recent fighting to change the present. What starts out as a relatively simple story of sci-fi action becomes more and more outlandish, complex, and metaphysical. Those who like their stories to have land that can be easily followed and understood will be left frustrated with The 3rd Birthday story.Others will appreciate the way his story abandons any attempt to make literal sense in favor of more poetic exploration of themes such as existence, identity and memory, though stilted dialogue often sounds like something from a bad soap opera.

But even those who find the plot is too esoteric information will enjoy watching it be told. The high production values between sequences makes Twisted devastating attacks on New York City disturbing. The voice cast is not as good as it can be expected with the unnatural dialogue and score shifts adeptly between memorable and exciting to match action. The levels are varied and attractive, your missions take you into the backstage area at a popular club, through a damaged skyscraper and into an ethereal realm where bodies and urban elements such as subway cars run together with the monstrous Twisted Queen. The journey finally culminates in a climatic battle that makes good use of a famous New York City location.

.

Unfortunately, the character around whom this story is a frustrating one. A story like this needs a strong hero in the middle, and Aya comes across as too weak to support the story. Aya psyche is understandably worried about her memory loss and fragments of memory that haunts her dreams, but she comes across as overly demure and weak commitment rather than fragile and vulnerable. During cutscenes, often she reacts people not with words but with a preliminary whimper, and when a character talks about her appearance in ways that are inappropriate and downright creepy, Aya reactions make it seem like she finds this treatment perfectly normal. Aya is one part action hero, one-part submissive sex object (a facet that is reinforced by some of the most revealing and insanely impractical clothes you can unlock) and it is a combination that does not work in the game's favor. Aya's weakness also in need of gameplay where the sounds she makes when she gets hit, you are less like those of a wounded woman and more like them, a petulant little girl who has been told she can not get any more candy .

All struggle in third Birthday involving firearms, but this is not a shooter. With most weapons, you can lock onto targets automatically, so defeat the enemies are often a matter of keeping the lock-on button and then press or press the fire button. The trick is not to hit them as much as staying alive long enough to do enough damage to kill them. It is not only the many ugly tentacled varieties of Twisted and other creatures you encounter that make surviving tricky, but it is the rigid control. You move Aya in the third person, and her casual jogging speed does not become life and death situations, where she finds herself, is not sufficient for dodging enemy projectiles and keep you away from danger. Hiding behind barricades shields you from some attacks and slowly restore your health, but most attacks destroy these barricades quickly so you can not rely on coverage for long. Aya can perform a quick evasive rolls, although performing three consecutive leaves her breathless and vulnerable to attack. Controlling a character whose slow, restricted movements makes her very vulnerable often thwarts voltage gameplay strive to provide.
