Getting A Government Grant For Your Invention: 5 Tips
As an inventor, you will have realized that it takes more than just genius to turn your invention idea into a real product and get it on the market
. To make this happen you will also need funding. Earlier, most inventors had to depend on the goodwill of rich individuals and families and many famous inventors have had to depend on patrons for financing. Now, however, you don't have to depend on the patronage of a rich individual. There are several government programs that can help fund your imagination, realize your dreams and even market your invention.
*If your invention is still in the 'idea' stage, you can apply for a grant so that you can carry on your research and development (R&D). However, you will have to make sure that your invention and final product adheres to the government's concept of R&D and prove that you will be able to market it once ready.
*There are also grants available for inventions that will help protect the environment or wildlife. These are not very large sums but it will get you started. Grants are available for inventions relating to agriculture, disaster management and prevention, transportation, and energy-saving.
*Before applying for financial aid you need to first do find the program that that is relevant to your invention. While most grants are for individuals, some are meant for companies, so you need to careful about what grant you apply for.
*When registering on one of the grant program websites, you will receive a number that you need to note carefully; you will need this number when you make your application. After finishing the registration process, you will need to enter this number and then wait between three and five working days for your registration to be completed.
*After this you will receive a tracking number which you will have to quote in all correspondence between you and the government grant program, and you will be kept abreast with all developments via email. After the application is cleared, it will be passed on to the department that will look into the pros and cons of your invention. You will receive the grant if your invention is deemed deserving.
The advantage of getting a government grant is that you won't be dependent on or indebted to someone for their generosity. Of course, government agencies also look for inventors who can serve a purpose, but at the end of the day you are left to your devices while you develop your idea.
