Getting Recovery Or Creating Discs For Your New Computer
The holiday season is well behind us - so I'm very late with this article
. Nonetheless, I have advice here that may at a future time change your brick of silicon, copper, lead, and gold back into a functioning computer.
I'm talking about recovery discs. It's unusual for a manufacturer to include recovery discs with a new computer these days. What is usually done is the recovery information is put on to the computer's hard drive along with a program to make that info into a recovery disc set - which you, the computer owner/user must create. The recovery disc creation program is almost always set to prompt you to create the set when you first start the new computer.
Some manufacturers allow you to make ONLY ONE recovery disc set - HP does this and I think that Dell does also. So it's important to get everything in place before beginning the set creation. You will need several blank DVD-Rs or CD-Rs. Make sure you have enough blank discs, and if it's a laptop, that the battery is fully charged. If you're doing this on a desktop, try to do it when there's less likelihood of power failures (not during storm or tornado season) - do it while plugged into a UPS if you can.

Some programs will also create the recovery information on a USB memory stick (thumb drive) of sufficient capacity if you wish. If you want to use a USB drive, I recommend you use a fairly new one that's large enough and has been tested to ensure it's read/writable - and (best case) will boot your computer if set up properly. (That's a technical process - if you can't test the bootability, it should be OK without doing so.) Once you've created the recovery stick, DO NOT use it for any other purpose AND store it away from sources of magnetism.
But I recommend you use DVDs, not a memory stick. If the HP laptop I just did for a customer here today is indicative, you'll need 4 or 5 DVD-Rs. Creating the set is usually very simple - load a blank disc into the drive, start the recovery disc creation program, and follow its prompts (labelling the discs as suggested when they're done).
It can sometimes be difficult to FIND the recovery disc creation program if you've clicked it away (as an annoyance) after starting the new computer. But it is almost always available. corruption of the software, an accidental mistake you make, a random cosmic ray changing a bit (yes - it happens). If you can't find how to start the recovery disc creation program, the last resort is to contact the computer manufacturer's support (Mr. Google is your friend!) and they can tell you how to start it.
And finally - many manufacturers will provide a factory manufactured recovery disc set for little or no cost - if requested while the computer is under warranty. A factory manufactured set is more desirable as it lasts longer and is readable by more worn drives than a set made by you.
