Getting The Best Fit; The Right Generator For The Job

If you or someone you know is getting ready for a major construction project

, whether it be home renovation or an office revamp chances are they will need to employ the uses of a generator. The portable power units are capable of giving life to a variety of objects from tiny power tools to huge mobile office spaces needed to collaborate on the project at hand. Making sure you have decided on the right generator for the job is not nearly as difficult of performing brain surgery, but it does however need a little research to make sure you have properly anticipated your power needs.

When you are zeroing in on what the best generator for the job will be, there is a general rule of thumb in the industry that is adhered to. These three important decision making factors are a) the type of load (heaters and lighting being a resistant load, equipment that is turned on and off being an induction load), b) the total amount of power and watts that will be required of the generator and lastly, c) the amount of power that the generator to be chosen is capable of supplying.

When determining your projects load, take a look a look at what you will be needing it for. Will you be working at night? If so you will probably need to power some form of lighting or spotlight which will fall into the resistant load category. Will you be working in cold conditions and need a heater of some sort? Yup, thats a resistance load as well. If your project doesnt fall into the scope of needing these things then you will generally only need a generator that is capable of supplying an induction load (the most common of generators needed for construction tasks.

The next determinant is choosing what sort of wattage levels your project will be needing. If you are like most people, you probably read that last statement, scratched your head a few times and let out a slow, huh? Well thankfully, there is a super easy way of figuring out what amount of power will be necessary for the task. Finding the total watts of the load to be connected comes down to a simple formula of amps times volts, the resulting number being the wattage requirement. All motors require a bit more power to come alive from a cold start. An average capacitor motor will need about six time the juice to begin and a standard universal motor will need about only two times the current for shorter lengths.

One you have covered your bases with the two previous areas, finding the right generator for the job comes down to a matter of power. If the generator has an adequate amount of juice to start the load, it will consequently have enough power capabilities to keep it running.

Other methods of finding the right generator can be to measure the amperage rather than the wattage. This number is achieved by taking the wattage and dividing by 120.

With all this information in hand, strolling into a rental facility or wholesale retailer with the task of getting a generator becomes a much less difficult thing!
