There are so many different rules, regulations and requirements that companies and owners all have to abide by or face steep penalties, and with this kind of pressure it can be a stressful experience when they dont know where to go to get all of these required papers filled out. All companies and businesses that are operating in the city of San Diego are required to obtain a Business Tax Certificate, and this includes home based businesses, those who are self employed and independent contractors.

There are different regulations and rules in place for different types of businesses and different varieties of ownerships. Health care agencies are required to provide different documentation than banks and credit unions, for example. Those who are in business as a sole proprietorship are required to keep different information up to date than companies that are limited liability companies or corporations. However, before you go running off to try to get your San Diego business permit, there are some things you need to do first to make sure that you are doing everything that is required of you. This way you will have an easier time getting your permits with as little stress as possible.

Step One involves tax registration. You will need an Employer Identification Number, or EIN. Employers that have employees, corporations and business partnerships have to obtain one of these numbers from the United States Internal Revenue Service. This number is also commonly referred to as the Employer Tax ID and Form SS 4 as well. You can call the IRS for information on obtaining this important number, and on their website they also have a guide to the Employer Identification Number and also the ability to apply for it online! How stress free is that?

Before you get your business permit in San Diego, you need to know that businesses in California have to register for one or more permits, not just one general business one. These might include income tax withholding, sales and use tax (sellers permits) and others. You also probably will be required to apply for licenses and permits with the county and the city along with the state. For a general starting point for the actual San Diego business permit that you need, you will need to go to your city or county clerk or revenue department.
