Getting involved with your child's school

Getting involved with your child's school

When a child begins school, parents also begin a journey into the educational experience of their son or daughter. Parental involvement is crucial in a child's social, emotional, and cognitive development. It's important to have a hands-on approach to the education of your child, so here are a few tips to help you to become a part of the new world that will be your child's environment for several hours each day in the coming years.

- Get to know your child's teachers and classmates. School systems today often rely on volunteers. Ask the teacher if you can come in to help with anything, whether that is monitoring children in the lunch room or to help get supplies ready for art projects. Teachers need your help, and by being present in the school building you will also be able to get to know the names, faces, and the personalities that your child will be with every day.

- Look into joining the PTA or other parent groups in your school. By doing this you can learn more about the decisions that the school will be making, such as what's being offered in the canteen and changes to the kids' school uniforms. You'll also make friends with other parents.

- Have play dates and invite the parents. Look for ways to meet the other parents. It may be hard for you to reach out to people you don't know, but you have an immediate connection with them via your kids. By spending time with the parents of your children's friends you will build connections into the school as well. This is how you can start to build up a team of people who have the same educational values and goals for your children that you do.

- Attend events. You may have to rearrange your schedule and plan accordingly, but make sure you are at the parent teacher conferences, school concerts, and bake sales. This is where you will also meet other parents and teachers and get to know them better.

- Be proactive. If your school is not offering the choices that you want for your child, then you can raise questions and petition for change. Chances are if it is something that you want for your child - more playground space, a change in the kids' schoolwear or better tuck shop food- other parents are looking for the same thing. If you have used some of the other tips above to get to know parents and teachers, you will have no problem getting this movement started because you will have formed relationships with people who are important in getting things done.

It is important that you take the time to invest into your children's school and education. Their future depends on it!
