Obviously size will play a big part as smaller rooms won't want huge, overbearing fixtures giving them a cartoonish look. Likewise, a chandelier might look out of place in an ultra modern room, whilst stainless steel spotlights are going to be incongruous in a stately, period room.

Ultimately, the light fittings you chose need to be considerate to your mood as well as complimenting the look and feel of the room they are placed in. If you can combine the two, you, and your room, will both be very happy.
