Give Your Bathroom A New Look With A New Mirror

No mirror in a home is used as much as the bathroom mirror

. Bathroom mirrors come in all shapes, sizes and styles. First, decide where you want the new mirror. Will it hang on a wall or be the door to a medicine cabinet? Perhaps you want more than one mirror, a full-length mirror hung behind the door of a linen closet and another decorative mirror you'll use constantly. Don't forget to consider special mirrors, such as non-fogging shaving mirrors that hang in a shower stall on a pivoting arm, or a makeup mirror at a makeup vanity; this one might swivel to a magnified side or have special lights so you can check you makeup under natural or fluorescent lighting.

Speaking of makeup vanities, if you have one or plan to get one, consider a tri-fold mirror. This mirror will show you your appearance from several angles, so you can check your hair and makeup to be sure you're satisfied with the way you look.

For a vanity mirror, you have so many options. Round or oval, square or rectangular, framed or bevelled: whatever your taste runs to, there's a mirror that suits it. For a mirror with added functionality, try one that mounts on brackets so that it tilts. You'll get better views when doing your hair or shaving. A wall-mounted tilting mirror comes in several shapes, such as rectangular, arched and round.

If your bathroom features a vanity with a double sink, a beautiful mirror, trimmed in the same material as the vanity and the same width as the vanity, give the bathroom an elegant and coordinated look. The mirror will be functional too when both sinks are in use. No need to jockey for position to see what you need to see in the mirror; there'll be plenty of room for two reflections. Consider putting task lighting above this mirror to help you see better, especially if your bathroom lacks a source of natural light such as a window or a skylight.

Perhaps you like the frameless look. To add visual interest, consider a mirror with a bevelled edge. This classic look matches just about every decor and comes in most sizes too. If the bevelled edge strikes you as too contemporary for your traditional bath, the Venetian mirror might be the very style you need. This frameless mirror is etched near the edges and comes in nostalgic shapes. Oval and heart-shaped Venetian mirrors are but two of the shapes, both with embellished edging. More fanciful shapes are possible. The etching on some Venetian mirrors is colored, the better to show off the delicate tracery.

Don't forget to buy at least one tabletop or hand mirror for your bathroom. Smaller portable mirrors find uses outside the bathroom. They are handy to have around, and usually inexpensive enough that most people have several. You can find Venetian hand mirrors to match your Venetian wall mirror, if you so choose.

If it's a new medicine cabinet with mirrored door that you really need, you don't have to sacrifice style for function. You'll find mirrored medicine cabinets with bevelled edges, with cathedral arches and with task lights above the doors. You'll find medicine cabinets with single, double or triple doors. If traditional is your decor, look for wood-framed cabinets with arched lights resembling old-fashioned gas lamps above the doors or cabinets with embossed wooden trim.

Clean your mirror with a clean, soft cloth. Use plain warm water. Avoid ammonia, vinegar, or other harsh glass cleaners. If you find you must use a glass cleaner, spray it on the cloth and not directly on the mirror.
