Give Your Teenagers With A Little Culture
Your family holidays abroad are always fun, but if you have older children and teenagers
, then why not try introducing them to a little culture and a few landmarks.
The Museum Of Modern Art was opened in 1929 just after the economy collapse and was created thanks to donations from three wealthy collectors who, challenging the policy of the Metropolitan Museum, intended to promote a concept that art was not limited to the traditional arts (i.e. painting and sculpture), but extend also to the modern visual arts. These included design, photography, film, print and more. The result was a truly impressive collection of art works of various kinds, which progressively became larger and larger, thanks to a great many donations. This gave birth to the first and largest modern art museum in the world, with nearly 300,000 works to its credit.
There are various collections, as well as that of pictorial art mainly devoted to the Impressionists. There is architecture and there is design (contemporary-design), as well as drawings (over 6000 on paper), there is media and film (with 19,000 film), sculpture and painting (with over 3,200 works), photography (over 25,000 works), illustrated books and prints (over 50,000 pieces). The expansion of the museum has created (over time), the need to raise new exhibition spaces, so, thanks to generous private donations, started in 1998, there was a colossal renovation, that entrusted Japanese architect Yoshio Tanigu to create 80,000 square meters. The result is a linear construction, with lots of glass and no eccentricities, not to steal the show with works of art.
During the renovation, which lasted more than 4 years, the works were transferred into a temporary exhibition space in Queens, opened in 2002 and decommissioned in 2004, a circumstance which contributed to enter the suburb in the tourist circuits. The relocation of the collections has been long and expensive; the transport was made by river, followed by tight security and has involved the construction of ad hoc structures for embarkation and disembarkation of the precious cargo.
Take your kids to see the Brooklyn Bridge on your family holidays abroad. Opened in 1883 to connect the suburb of Brooklyn to Manhattan, with its 1825 meters remained for many years, the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge is 26 meters wide, while the part that goes over the East River is 41 meters high; its pylons are anchored to 24 meters below sea level on the side of Manhattan and 14 meters from the side of Brooklyn. These numbers clearly show that the construction of the bridge was, at that time, an extraordinary feat of engineering, to build it so that it took almost 15 years. Its structure is composed of steel cables anchored to the bases of granite. It is on two levels: the lower level is intended for automobile traffic, with six lanes (three in each direction) every day that allow the transit of hundreds of thousands of commuters, the higher and narrower part is instead dedicated to pedestrians and bicycles. The inauguration of the bridge was marked by various events and is still a beloved part of the city.
