Any painted or wallpapered surface or bare wood can be covered with paint made from a synthetic resin called alkyd (often combined with other resins). This type of paint will not adhere to bare masonry or plaster, andshould not be used on bare wallboard because it will raise a nap on the wallboards paper covering.

Alkyd is the most durable of the common finishing paints. It is also practically odor free. For House Painting, you can take advantage of this characteristic, use low odor solents (usally listed on the manufacturers label) for thinning and clean up, but bear in mind that the fumes of these solvents, though nearly imperceptible, are flammable and toxic

Most alkyds are dry enough for a second in four to six hours. Although some latex paints will not bond well to alkyd, most other paints can be applied over it.

House Painting - Oil Paint

For many years paints based on natural plant oils, such as tung or linseed oils, dominated interior house painting. An oil paint adheres well to bare wood and to surfaces previously painted with laytex, alkyd or oil. In high gloss and semigloss finishes, it stands upto repeated washing.

Oil paint has so many drawbacks, however, that it has largely been replaced by latex and alkyd mixtures and is now hard to find. In flat finishes, oil paint is less durable than alkyd. It does not adhere to wallpaper, bare wallboard or masonry.

The oils in the paint give it a strong, unpleasant odor, and it must be thinned with strong smelling turpentine or mineral spirits (tools and spills, however, can be cleaned with realtively odor free solvents used for alkyd paints). An oil base paint takes from 12 to 24 hours to dry sufficently for a second coat, and from two to four days to dry thoroghly.

Although latex will not adhere well to a high gloss oil paint, alkyds and other oil base paints can be applied over it.
