Home lighting is another realm full of potential energy savings. For instance, keeping our shades open during the day is often enough to light the home or office. However, this isn't a wise energy choice if the sunlight heats our room and kicks on the air conditioner. Energy use in the home is often a delicate balancing act. Of course, when it comes to lighting our home, there are many steps we can take to make a positive impact.

Windows provide us with a great way to light our home without using electricity. We can let light help heat the home when it's cool, or we can keep excess sunlight out when it's hot. One method is to invest in automatic shades. The most basic involves the use of a timer to control when shades are drawn. Simply set the timer to open shades and close them depending on your lighting and heating needs. Photocell shades are another option. These shades react to actual light levels, and will open and close depending on your settings.

Perhaps another lighting transition to consider deals with the actual bulbs you use. This is an easy switch, much like using reusable shopping bags. New compact fluorescent bulbs lead to massive energy savings. The only downside to these is in their disposal. Check to see how best to dispose of them in your area. However, the energy savings of fluorescent bulbs over common incandescent bulbs is tremendous.

Of course, a little more work can lead to even more energy savings. Making sure your lights are off when not needed makes a huge difference. This can seem a bit tedious at times, especially if you have kids. Fortunately, the use of motion sensors can reduce the hassle. Rigging lights to motion sensors is a great way to reduce energy use. Whether it is in the bathroom, playroom, or living room, having lights that turn on and off by themselves can make a big difference. They are especially convenient at night!

Another must have for any home is the light tube. Light tubes are cost-effective skylights made from a special light capturing lens on the rooftop, and a light dispersing lens on the ceiling. These light tubes are made to attach between rafters and are a cinch to install. They can easily light even large rooms during the day. Strategically placed light tubes can effectively eliminate the need for any lights during the day. Best of all, they cost little more than a quality lamp to purchase, and then cost nothing at all to use!
